What are the requirements to make backups?

Determine a backup system that fits the needs of a company is a difficult job. Some users wonder what characteristics this backup must have to be effective and we do not find ourselves one day that, when an incident occurs, not being able to recover the lost files. However, another aspect of concern is the use of the space allocated to backups, whether they are in-house or outsourced servers.

In this post we would like to highlight some of the features that should meet the online backup system that our company performs (because as we have already explained, it is better to make backups online than on physical devices).

Backup features: essential elements

  • Security and reliability. With all files stored in the cloud, it is necessary to follow security standards that make it a reliable system. A good antivirus, firewall, backup copies and data encryption system will be essential, not only to protect the files, but also to comply with the confidentiality regulations of the GDPR.
  • Automation: it is useless to have a storage system if we have to manually make the backups. This protocol would lead to multiple human errors: days that have not been backed up, poorly saved or lost copies, etc.
  • Storage space: although it is not mandatory to store all the files that are produced every day in the company in the backup system, it is necessary to have a large and, above all, scalable storage service. 1 or 2 Gb may be the most suitable to start with when not handling large volumes of data.
  • Simplicity and good interface: it is desirable that the interface of the cloud program we are using is as intuitive as possible, so that any authorized person can retrieve data easily and in the shortest possible time.
  • Periodicity: Another important aspect is the periodicity with which the backup system allows us to schedule backups. The shorter the period, the less likely it is that an incident will exceed the company’s security policy. It is desirable to make a copy at least once every 24 hours and, if necessary, in real time.

If you are going to choose a backup system, it is recommended that you look at these details and compare different options before making your decision.
